01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Along Suzuran Street in Asagaya-Minami, the shelves at Kaikyo Bakery are stocked with familiar breads for everyday meals and snacks. Among the savoury options, the dashi-rolled omelette sandwich stands out: thick, fluffy eggs packed with dashi and paired with mustard mayonnaise. Other savoury breads bring together Japanese and Western-style fillings, including kinpira, generously filled with a sweet-and-savoury mixture, and cumin and bacon, seasoned with aromatic spices.

There is plenty to choose from on the sweet side, too. The cream bun, filled with smooth custard, is a popular staple. Fuku-fuku bean anpan balances savoury beans with plenty of smooth red bean paste; yomogi anpan and seasonal chestnut pie are among the other baked treats and sweet breads that let the ingredients’ flavours come through. For a small snack, try a petite wholemeal scone or a walnut and chestnut stick.

For the everyday table, the bakery also sells white bread that turns crisp and light when toasted, as well as reduced-salt white bread, reduced-salt wholemeal rolls and country-style bread with a simple, wheaty flavour. This compact shop offers takeaway, with an easy-going selection ranging from breakfast loaves to savoury lunch breads and treats.
